At the heart of the action
An hour spent in the water between this humpback whale carcass and 6 tiger sharks that came to meet me. We were in the olfactory column, of the carcass. That is to say that it drifted with the wind and the trail it left (grease, piece of meat, smell) created an odorous column in which the tiger sharks moved and went up it permanently. I was closest to the carcass, less than two meters from it when I took this photo. It was at this time that I was at the maximum in competition with them (knowing that they are already there among themselves) because in the immediate vicinity of their all-you-can-eat buffet, as close as possible to the action.
In the foreground we can see a medium-sized tiger shark stalking the whale carcass to tear off shreds of flesh and fat. In the background we can see a second tiger shark approaching. But I do not have in my field of vision the 4 other tiger sharks present on the scene. To take this photo in split level, I had to hold the camera housing for a few seconds on the surface, which required me a palming effort, certainly not very important, but enough to make the situation still a little more dangerous...
