A pneumatophore is an aerial overgrowth of the roots of some trees whose function is gas exchange when they are impossible for roots in wetlands. The mangrove is an ecosystem damaged by the pressure of man. Yet its role is crucial for the good health of the lagoon as well as beaches and islands. Nurseries, rampart against erosion and silting, mangroves must be imperatively protected.
